JOGL: A Short Poem

January 31st, 2008 No comments

Oh, JOGL, how you claim to be
The answer to my Java graphics quandary
With promises of opening Eclipse to GL,
But all my renderings look to hell.
At first, I couldn’t find my library.
Setting CLASSPATHS was becoming quite scary.
And, finally, when I got proper linking,
I was still left there sitting, wondering, thinking,
Why it was that when I hit “Run as App”
The screen buffer filled with a bunch of crap.
Frames, and Canvases and Panels all a mess!
I don’t remember C++ causing all this stress!
My fingers all tense and teeth all a’grinding,
I say go to trashcan you after-thought binding!
So maybe in a while, I’ll try again to render,
But for now, I’m just feeling far too tender.
And when the time comes that I miss pixel maps,
Hopefully I can get my hands on some better apps.

Update 1 of Many

January 30th, 2008 No comments

Clearly, I’ve been failing at my resolutions of doing something with this long-forgotten chuck of the Internet, but give me a break, it’s been busy at work.

Anyway, since I’ve been in yet another creative rut recently, I’m going to try and brute force a little spark out of these cold, boring fingers of mine. How, you ask? Well I’m going to do it Doogie Howzer style and try to write at least a few lines of something here (anything, no matter how paltry) EVERY DAY.

Essentially, this will be like a very slowly updating Twitter account. Brace yourselves.

And, yeah, as for the video podcasting thing: a few people asked me about it, and it is something I’m going to get into eventually. I played around with some of the software that would be needed and the whole thing is easy enough to set up on Wordpress. So, stay tuned… Just not too keenly, because it might be a while before I actually do anything.

New Years Resolutions

January 2nd, 2008 No comments

I tend to be an avid speaker-againster of the holiday seasons and their related practices, however, I feel personally compelled to make a few New Year’s resolutions. Of course, there’s nothing particularly crucial about any of them, which will make it pretty easy for me to participate in yet another typical holiday tradition: breaking my New Year’s resolutions.

I’ll list them here in no particular order:

1. Makeover! Recently, I’ve grown pretty peeved at the crappy way a lot of WordPress themes are written. Even the one I’m currently using, a chopped and screwed version of Fluidity, is poorly designed and really clunky to look at from a web dev perspective. As such, I’ve undertaken the task of designing my own theme from the bottom up… Well, actually, it’s been designed from the top down, but you know what I mean. Those of you who were bored enough to visit this site in the last few days may have noticed it looks pretty crappy; such is testing, and I will try to limit the “downtime” by using a crappy yet okay looking theme during the times I’m not working on the new one.

2. Come up with some kind of a theme for my blog. I’ve been told I need to find a passion and that my non-structured blog may just be a reflection of my lack of focus. As such, I’m taking recommendations on what my new passion should be. All ideas are welcome… And will probably be summarily “ripped a new one” and forgotten. In fact, ripping things a new one may be the new focus of the blog.

3. Make a foray into video podcasting. I’ve been watching and listening to a lot of clever video podcasts/podcasts lately, and I’m thoroughly intrigued. I always claim that I might be good as a show host for some nerdy TV station, so I’m thinking it may be time to give public broadcast a genuine grassroots effort using my new computer and that nifty built in camera it’s got. Those of you who see my face way too freaking often already will just have to deal.

I hope everyone had a great holiday season, and whatnot. I, personally, am overjoyed that they’re over. Now I just have to worry about the January rush at the gym… As if there weren’t enough dumbbells there already.
